Game One

The Tigers were down, but had kept it competitive, down one run going into the bottom of the eighth.  Max Scherzer didn’t have his best stuff last night, but after a rough first two innings, he seemed to settle in and was straight dealing at one point. Until that eighth inning. Putting it kindly, the Tigers laid an egg in the eighth, and what had been a completely winnable game became a 12-3 blowout laugher.

Starting Pitching

Justin Verlander(15-12, 4.52 ERA) is 7-5 with a 3.28 ERA in his career in the Post Season in 93.1 innings pitched. Verlander has been effective against the Orioles in his career, with a 9-2 record and a 3.43 ERA in 105 innings pitched. While Verlander had what was easily the worst season of his professional career, he seemed to regain some of his old form in his September starts, perhaps finally recovering from his offseason surgery at the right time. The Tigers definitely need to see Verlander on his A-Game today.

Wei-Yin Chen(16-6, 3.54 ERA) is 1-0 with a 4.91 ERA in his career against the Tigers in 11 innings pitched. This is his first Post Season appearance.
