Game Preview
For the second straight day, the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles battle in Spring Training Grapefruit League action, but this time they head to the Orioles winter/spring home in Sarasota, Florida. This will be Baltimore’s first “home” game of the spring campaign.
When We Last Met
The teams played an hour and a half northeast of Sarasota to open Grapefruit League action at Joker Marchant Stadium with the Tigers coming out with the resounding victory 15-2. Yoenis Cespedes was the star of the show, belting a fourth inning Grand Slam to break into a Detroit uniform in style. Sure the win was impressive, but the Orioles weren’t playing with many starters. This will likely be the case today for the Tigers as the travel team will get on the bus and take the field.
Detroit Tigers Starting Lineup
Anibal Sanchez will receive his first action since last year’s infamous Game 2 of the ALDS against these same Orioles. In that game he pitched two perfect innings in just his second appearance since August 8. His removal from that game, which lead to Joba Chamberlain and Joakim Soria meltdowns, was heavily criticized.
Sanchez had an up and down 2014 season, mainly due to injuries. When he was healthy he was arguably the Tigers’ best starting pitcher, but two stints on the disabled list, including an extended one toward the end of the season, really hurt the team. With Rick Porcello and Max Scherzer gone, it is important for Anibal to stay healthy and have another successful year as he did in 2013 when he went 14-8 with a 2.57 ERA and 1.154 WHIP.
Interesting “B-Team” lineup for the Tigers. Teams don’t often send too many regulars on the road in Spring Training and while some familiar names are in the lineup, not many made the trip. Anthony Gose gets his first shot at leadoff, Jose Iglesias returns to the lineup after taking yesterday off and Brad Ausmus is experimenting with Andrew Romine in left field.
- Anthony Gose-DH
- Jose Iglesias-SS
- J.D. Martinez-RF
- Nick Castellanos-3B
- Aaron Westlake-1B
- Bryan Holaday-C
- Daniel Fields-CF
- Hernan Perez-2B
- Andrew Romine-LF
