Game Preview
With six days left before Opening Day, the Detroit Tigers toss their premier pitcher out for one final Spring Training game. David Price gets today’s start before opening the season on the Comerica Park mound April 6 against the Minnesota Twins.
The Tigers got off to a 2-0 start yesterday in Lakeland against the Atlanta Braves, receiving a rare strong start from Alfredo Simon who went six innings of one-run ball, but Joba Chamberlain did what Joba does and allowed two runs to let Atlanta win 4-2.
The 10-17 Tigers’ are now assured of having a losing record in Grapefruit League play for the first time since—eh, who cares…..
When We Last Met
This is the second and final game between Pittsburgh and Detroit this Spring with the Pirates winning the first game on March 18. In one of just two night games this spring, the Tigers mounted a ninth inning comeback, scoring four runs, but fell one-run short, losing in Brandenton, 8-7.
The two teams, which are anointed by MLB as “natural interleague rivals,” wont have long until they renew rivalries as the Tigers will be the home opening opponent for a National League for the first time ever. They will play three games in Pittsburgh from April 13 to 15 and the two teams will play again at Comerica Park from June 30 to July 2.
Detroit Tigers Lineup
Price has been fairly sharp since having a tough start to Spring Training. In his last outing he made one major mistake and it cost him three runs in the fourth inning but was good other than than, striking out seven in a 6-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles last Thursday.
Former Minnesota Twin Vance Worley will start for the Pirates.
