When We Last Met
Justin Verlander‘s second outing was not as positive as his first after allowing three homers to the New York Yankees in a 7-2 loss, the Detroit Tigers third straight setback. One of those homers was to Alex Rodriguez, who notched his 3,000th hit in the process. V-Mart returned to the lineup, hitting cleanup, and went 1-for-4 and scored a run.
Pitching Matchup
Alfredo Simon (7-3, 2.58) surrendered just one earned run, scattering seven hits in 7.1 innings on April 20, giving the Detroit Tigers their lone win of the last series against New York. Aside from one stinker where he allowed six runs on April 30, Simon has been very solid this year, including his last start. He picked up the win by holding the Cleveland Indians scoreless through five innings. He was removed early because of a rain delay but left the game with a 2-0 lead.
Nathan Eovaldi (5-2, 5.12) was bombed in his last outing, allowing eight runs in just 2/3 of an inning on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins. It follows a fairly nice stretch for the right-hander who has allowed just eight runs over his previous four outings. Eovaldi kept the Tigers’ bats in check in an April meeting in Detroit, going seven innings, allowing one run on eight hits in the 5-2 Yankees’ victory.
