Detroit Tigers Even Series With KC Royals, Win 2-1

For the second time in four days, a starting left handed pitcher not named David Price got a win for the Detroit Tigers.

Instead it was two prospects received in the deal that sent Price to Toronto, who are showing they have what it takes to stay in the big leagues. On Sunday, the major piece of the deal, Daniel Norris, looked flawless over 7.1 innings in his debut against the Orioles, walking away with the 6-1 victory.

Wednesday Night, the second major prospect received, Matt Boyd, made his debut with Detroit and looked just as impressive.

In only his third career start, Boyd was tasked with shutting down the AL Central leading Kansas City Royals, who have been a thorn in the Tigers side all season.

Boyd came out and completely fooled the Royals. Changing speeds and eye levels, Kansas City was flying out all night and could not figure him out. His stuff isn’t as powerful as Norris, however his deception is definitely MLB worthy.

His final stats for the night were 7 IP, 7 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K’s on 106 pitches. The only run for the Royals came off a rare Kendrys Morales RBI triple in the 4th inning, which scored Eric Hosmer from first. Boyd is now 1-2 on the season

The losing pitcher for Kansas City was newly acquired Johnny Cueto, whom the Royals traded for just before the trade deadline last week from the Cincinnati Reds.

Cueto allowed both runs due to separate triples, one off the bat of Anthony Gose to drive in Tyler Collins in the 3rd and the other from Ian Kinsler who was brought home on a Victor Martinez fielders choice in the 4th.

His final numbers were 7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 2 K’s on 106 pitches as well. The loss drops him to 7-7 on the year and 0-1 as a member of the American League.

The Tigers did there best to make things interesting in the late innings as usual.

After Bruce Rondon had a quick 8th inning, Manager Brad for some reason brought in left hander Blaine Hardy to close out the game. Hardy was removed after Mike Moustakas lined a ball to right that was some how tracked down by J.D. Martinez to possibly save the game. With 2 outs, Manager Brad put in his most dependable bullpen arm all season, in Alex Wilson.

Wilson allowed a base runner, but closed the game out the following batter for his 2nd save of the season.

Tomorrow Afternoon, the fiery Yordano Ventura (6-7 4.98 ERA) takes on Anibal Sanchez (10-9 4.77 ERA) at 1:08PM at Comerica Park.
