When We Last Met
Alfredo Simon followed up the best start of his season with the worst and set the Detroit Tigers in two four-run deficits. The offense, which was missing in the Texas series, showed up and attempted two comebacks but fell short in the 8-7 loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Pitching Matchup
Justin Verlander (1-6, 3.86) is still seeking his second win of the season for the Detroit Tigers, but it is not for a lack of trying. Verlander has quietly turned his season around after struggling following his return from injury in early June. His recent hot streak has taken his ERA down from a high of 6.75 after four starts, on July 5, down to a respectable 3.86.
Since that July 5 start J.V. has an ERA of 2.61 (and that includes a seven-run, 3.2 IP hiccup on July 19) but has gone 1-4 in that time, only getting an average of 2.7 runs in support. That support was non-existent in his last outing, going seven innings of four-hit, two-run ball, striking out eight in the 2-0 shutout loss to the Texas Rangers on Friday.
Former Chicago White Sox Hector Santiago (7-7, 2.91) was masterful in his last outing against the Tigers in May, throwing 7.1 shutout innings in the 2-0 Angels win. That was his first win against Detroit in 13 starts, although he had been sharp, posting a 1.71 ERA to go with three losses. He has gone 0-3 in six starts since his last win on July 20.
