When We Last Met

The Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Indians are meeting this weekend for the first time since the end of June. Detroit has just dominated the series against Cleveland this season, but the Indians won Friday, 8-1. Still, the Tigers are 9-3 versus the Tribe this season, averaging 5.4 runs per game.

In particular, first baseman Miguel Cabrera has crushed Indians pitching this season. Cabrera is slashing an absurd .587/.643/.957 with five home runs, 17 RBI and 12 runs in 56 plate appearances versus Cleveland in 2015.

Pitching Matchup

The Detroit Tigers have great numbers against Corey Kluber, so in a very strange way, the Tigers are upset that Kluber was scratched from Friday’s start. On Saturday, the Tigers will deal with 25-year-old Danny Salazar.

He is 12-7 with a 3.27 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 172 strikeouts in 151 1/3 innings. Salazar is one of four Indians starters who could potential strike out 200 batters this season. In his last start, Salazar allowed two runs on six hits in seven innings.

Detroit will send right-hander Alfredo Simon to the mound on Saturday. He is 11-9 with a 5.09 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 95 strikeouts in 146 2/3 innings this season. In his last two starts, Simon allowed six runs to the Toronto Blue Jays and eight runs to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. That means in the last 9 1/3 innings, Simon has been tagged with 14 runs, including five homers.
