Detroit Tigers players downed the White Sox 11-5 in the first game of a three-game set. This was Detroit’s seventh straight victory and the 12th time the team has scored 10 or more runs in a game this season.
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez matched up with James Shields in a battle between two pitchers who have struggled at times. Shields had been better in his last six starts, but BABIP and hard contact caught up with him tonight leading to his worst start in a month.
Sanchez was the first to stumble in this game. Jose Abreu doubled and Justin Morneau walked to put two men on with two outs. Dioner Navarro then singled to bring home the first run of the game.
The Tigers threatened a couple of times through the first few innings, but broke through with a big fifth inning, sending 10 players to the plate. Andrew Romine tripled and came home on a Jose Iglesias sacrifice fly.
Ian Kinsler then singled to center field in front of a Cameron Maybin ground ball down the left field line for a triple. Miguel Cabrera then hit a double to center to bring home another run and make it 3-1.
After an injury to Charlie Tilson in his Major League debut, Victor Martinez traded places with Cabrera to extend the Tigers lead to three. Justin Upton then singled and moved up on a fly ball to put runners on second and third with two outs. James McCann followed it up with a single to right field to give the Tiger s the 6-1 lead.

The Tigers then extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Maybin walked in front of Cabrera, who deposited a home run into the right field seats. Four of his last five home runs have gone to the opposite field.
Shane Greene then entered the game in the seventh inning and looked a bit rusty. He surrendered his first home run of the season as a reliever to cut the lead to 8-3.
The Tigers wanted a seven run lead, so they added two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Collins walked and Andrew Romine and Jose Iglesias were both hit by pitches to load the bases for Ian Kinsler, who singled home two more runs.
Justin Wilson then came in and also surrendered a home run in his inning of work, to everything-or-nothing hitter Todd Frazier.
The Tigers showed they really wanted a seven-run victory, so Victor Martinez added his first home run in a couple of weeks to put the Tigers up 11-4.
Mark Lowe ruined the Tigers’ dream in the 9th. Avisail Garcia unloaded his second home run of the game to cut the Tigers’ lead to 11-5.

These two teams will face off once again Wednesday night at 7:08 PM ET. Barring a jersey incident, Chris Sale will take the mound for the White Sox. The Detroit Tigers will counter with Michael Fulmer who will be looking for this 10th win of the season.
