Detroit Tigers Lose 2-0 to White Sox

The Detroit Tigers were defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0 in the middle game of a three-game set. Matt Boyd pitched well for Detroit, but was unable to come away with the victory.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Matt Boyd got the start for the team and pitched his way through hits, but did not get the needed offensive support. Boyd finished with a line of seven innings pitched, eight hits allowed, two runs allowed, one walk and six strikeouts.

The starter induced two double plays.  He only made one bad mistake to Jose Abreu, but made pitches when he needed them.

Miguel Gonzalez started for the White Sox which had been a favorable match up for the Tigers. However, Gonzalez was sharp. He finished with a line of 6.1 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K and threw very few pressure pitches.

The White Sox got the scoring started in the bottom of the second. Jose Abreu hit a hanging breaking ball about three quarters of the way up the left field grandstands to give the White Sox the 1-0 lead.

Chicago then added to the lead in the top of the fifth. Jason Coats doubled to left field with one out. Omar Narvarez then singled to center field to bring Coats home and give the White Sox the 2-0 lead.

The Tigers had multiple chances to get runs in the early innings, but could not push across a run. In the top of the third, Andrew Romine was hit by a pitch and Cameron Maybin singled.

With men on first and second and one out, Jose Iglesias hit a routine fly ball to right field. Maybin did not know where Avisail Garcia was playing and was doubled off of first on the fly out with Miguel Cabrera on deck.

The Tigers’ best chance to put runs on the board in bunches came in the seventh.

J.D. Martinez and Casey McGehee singled to end Gonzalez’s night. Dan Jennings then entered the game and walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia on four pitches to load the bases.

Following that, JaCoby Jones pinch hit while Ian Kinsler was available on the bench. Jones was ahead in the count 2-0, but swung through three fastballs to strikeout. Cameron Maybin then faced Nate Jones and struck out to end the threat.

The Tigers had one more chance in the ninth. J.D. Martinez hit a long fly ball that was called a home run, but went foul. He then singled and moved to second on an Erick Aybar walk. Saltalamacchia and Tyler Collins then both struck out to end the game.

After tonight’s loss, the Tigers are 4.5 games back of the Cleveland Indians. They are one game behind the Orioles in the Wild Card and one ahead of the Astros.

These two teams will conclude their series Wednesday afternoon at 2:10 PM ET. Anibal Sanchez will get the start for the Tigers. He will be opposed by Jose Quintana, whose ERA is 3.09 on the season.
