Detroit Tigers Recall Boyd, McGehee and Moya

Detroit Tigers players Matt Boyd, Casey McGehee and Steven Moya returned to the team on Tuesday after being recalled from the minor leagues. The trio should make an impact down the stretch.

Detroit Tigers fans will see three players return to the active roster on Tuesday. Starting pitcher Matt Boyd, infielder Casey McGehee and outfielder Steven Moya were all recalled by the team.

The Tigers‘ official Twitter account announced the move, tweeting, “Today the #Tigers have recalled LHP @mattboyd48, INF Casey McGehee and OF Steven Moya from Triple-A Toledo.”

Considering that the calendar has already turned to September, no corresponding moves were necessary. Boyd, McGehee and Moya were also already on the team’s 40-man roster.

All three have been on Detroit’s active roster for long stretches this season.

Boyd, who will also start Tuesday against Chicago, has made the most significant impact of the trio. The former Toronto farmhand has the fourth-highest WAR among starters on Detroit’s roster. All told, the 25-year-old is 5-2 with a 4.00 ERA and 67 strikeouts in 78.2 innings pitched.

Mainly filling in as an injury replacement for Nick Castellanos, McGehee has logged 82 at-bats with the Tigers. Those 82 at-bats have come over 22 games.

The infielder owns a .232 batting average and a .511 OPS. He’s accumulated four runs scored, three walks and an RBI with Detroit.

Rounding out the list is Moya, who flashed his considerable upside in a 26-game spell earlier in the season. The slugging outfielder mashed five home runs, four doubles and two triples in just 26 games. He also added five walks and 11 RBI. However, Moya continues to strike out at a high rate, with 34 punch outs at the Major League level this season.

Roles Moving Forward

Boyd will step back into the rotation, where the Tigers will count on him for quality innings. With Jordan Zimmermann and Mike Pelfrey missing time—not to mention Anibal Sanchez’ struggles—Boyd has stepped up.

The Washington native will look to extend his run of good form. He’s posted a 2.64 ERA in 44.1 innings since mid-July. Over that same span, he’s struck out 40 while holding opposing batters to a .290 on-base percentage.

It is entirely possible that Boyd could start a playoff game or two for the Tigers come October.

With Castellanos still sidelined, McGehee will likely continue to start games at third base with the occasional pinch-hitting appearance.

JaCoby Jones and Erick Aybar will both see time at the hot corner as well, so the former Brewer won’t garner the lion’s share of the starts at third. However, with a solid track record as a contact hitter, McGehee will get his chances to contribute. He could be in contention for a bench spot come playoff time.

Detroit Tigers manager Brad Ausmus has arguably the best outfield in all of baseball with Cameron Maybin, Justin Upton and J.D. Martinez. What’s more, the likes of Jones and Collins provide quality backups.

That being said, there probably won’t be too many opportunities for the power-hitting Moya to contribute regularly. However, his pop could be useful in pinch-hitting situations.
