Detroit Tigers baseball is back on Thursday. The team continues the 2017 regular season, as Detroit takes on the White Sox in Chicago. Here’s what you need to know to watch.

Detroit Tigers players will take the field for the second time in 2017 on Thursday.

In an ideal world, this would have been Detroit’s fourth game of the season. However, due to weather, the Tigers will leave Chicago with just two games played.

The weather has also shifted Detroit’s rotation around.

Justin Verlander, Jordan Zimmermann, Daniel Norris and Matt Boyd were slated to throw in the Windy City, with Michael Fulmer starting the home opener on Friday.

However, only Verlander and Boyd will exit Chicago with innings under their respective belts, as Zimmermann and Norris will instead throw in the Boston series.

Opposing the Tigers on Thursday will be James Shields.

The former Padre joined Chicago midway through last season and would go on to post a 6-19 record with a 5.85 ERA, a 6.01 FIP, a 5.21 xFIP and a 5.12 SIERA in 181.2 frames.

Shields also walked 4.06 batters per nine innings while surrendering 1.98 home runs per nine frames.

While the hurler’s career stats against the Tigers don’t look too bad—7-8, 4.47 ERA in 23 starts—last season was a struggle for Shields.

The veteran allowed 31 this, 17 runs (16 earned) and four home runs in 22 innings. He also uncorked a wild pitch while hitting two batters.

Shields did strike out 12 batters over the same span, but he also walked 10.

Detroit Tigers Against Shields

In terms of career numbers against James Shields, a number of Tigers own solid stat lines.

Miguel Cabrera has been the most successful Detroit hitter against the former Royal, with 24 hits in 64 career plate appearances.

That’s good for a .375 batting average.

What’s more, the slugger has 11 RBI, 10 doubles, seven walks and three home runs.

Moving down the line, Victor Martinez is a .302 hitter in 56 career plate appearances.

Alex Avila is a .300 hitter in 33 plate appearances against his former teammate, while Ian Kinsler is batting .273 in 73 plate appearances versus Shields.

Despite the comparatively low batting average, the second baseman has slugged more home runs against Chicago’s starter than against any other pitcher.

Lineup

According to a tweet from Detroit’s official Twitter account on Thursday morning, we now know how the Tigers will line up on Thursday.

  1. Ian Kinsler, Second Base
  2. Nick Castellanos, Third Base
  3. Miguel Cabrera, First Base
  4. Victor Martinez, Designated Hitter
  5. Justin Upton, Left Field
  6. Tyler Collins, Right Field
  7. James McCann, Catcher
  8. JaCoby Jones, Center Field
  9. Jose Iglesias, Shortstop

Additionally, Matt Boyd will start for the Tigers.

The Washington native faced the White Sox four times in 2016, allowing 27 hits and 11 earned runs in 19.2 innings.

However, Boyd’s numbers against the team were in part due to a rough start in mid-June. Chicago tagged the southpaw for seven hits, six runs, two home runs and a pair of walks in just 4.1 innings.

The starter would go on to allow five runs in his next eight innings against the Sox, before settling down in his final outing against the team.

In a September 6 start, Boyd gave up just eight hits, two runs and a walk in seven frames, punching out six in the process.
