Detroit Tigers baseball returns on Tuesday as the team continues the 2017 regular season against the New York Yankees. Here’s what you need to know to watch.
Detroit Tigers players will look to kick off August with a victory, as the franchise continues a series against the Yankees in New York.
The Tigers lost the first game in the series by a final score of 7-3, as a four-run fourth inning by the Yankees doomed Michael Fulmer and Detroit.
Overall, the reigning American League Rookie of the Year allowed seven hits, seven runs (six earned), three walks and a home run in six innings.
It could have been worse had right fielder Jim Adduci robbed Todd Frazier of a two-run home run in the sixth inning with a leaping catch at the wall.
Despite the final score line, the Tigers did put up a significant fight.
Detroit made New York hurler Luis Severino work to the tune of 116 pitches thrown in just five innings.
Elsewhere, the Tigers made things close late, loading the bases in the ninth inning against Ben Holder. The late offensive surge netted an extra run and prompted Yankees manager Joe Girardi to bring Aroldis Chapman into the game.
Offensively, Nicholas Castellanos and James McCann led the way for the Tigers with a pair of hits each. Castellanos and first baseman Miguel Cabrera also add two walks each, while Mikie Mahtook scored two of the team’s three runs.
Mahtook only registered one hit, but was plunked by Yankees pitching twice on the night.
