Detroit Tigers: Jhonny Peralta among three veterans worth flier as depth adds

Detroit Tigers executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager Al Avila could do with more depth signings. Here are three fits in Jhonny Peralta, Kevin Quackenbush and Pedro Beato.

Detroit Tigers fans could see a number of offseason moves from executive vice president of baseball operations and general manager Al Avila.

With Detroit rebuilding, a number of veteran pieces could conceivably be traded. These include second baseman Ian Kinsler, shortstop Jose Iglesias, closer Shane Greene and right-handed reliever Alex Wilson.

If those players and other veterans are traded, the Tigers will need some extra depth to help sustain the team over the course of a season.

These players would ideally be brought in as minor league signings and give Avila, new manager Ron Gardenhire and company as extra options.

Said players could begin in Toledo, but could also work their way into the Major League picture.

There’s plenty of potential to be had up and down the free agent market.

Ideally one or more of these players could conceivably become a contributor or even an eventual trade chip for the Tigers.

This is all speculative mind you, but here are three hypothetical depth adds for the Detroit Tigers.

Jhonny Peralta

Old friend Jhonny Peralta has struggled at the dish as of late. The infielder batted .204 with a .259 on-base percentage, a .214 wOBA and a 27 wRC+ in 58 plate appearances for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017.

He also had a rough spell with Boston’s Triple-A affiliate.

While there, the ex-Tiger posted a .195 on-base percentage and a 46 wRC+ in 41 plate appearances.

Still Peralta would give the Tigers some much-needed depth at both third base and shortstop as a veteran option waiting in Toledo a la Omar Infante last season.

Kevin Quackenbush

Kevin Quackenbush posted a 0.9 fWAR, a 2.65 FIP and 9.28 punch outs per nine innings in 54.1 frames as a rookie for San Diego.

According to Spotrac, Kevin Quackenbush can be controlled for three more seasons via arbitration if he’s signed.

Kevin Quackenbush should be signed by the Detroit Tigers—or at the very least, the team should look into adding him.

While the right-hander hasn’t been anywhere near as dominant from 2015 to 2017 (4.40 FIP, 7.7 strikeouts per nine innings) he’s still worth a flier.

The now-former Padre would be a solid fit as a non-roster invitee in Spring Training. At the very least, the Detroit Tigers could try and stash him in Toledo until he’s needed in the Majors.

Pedro Beato

A 31-year-old right-hander, Beato appeared in just one game in the Majors last season. However, he’s been extremely efficient at the minors’ highest level.

In 341.1 career innings at Triple-A, the veteran has  turned in a 3.03 ERA, a 1.219 WHIP and 7.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Those stats include a 2.75 ERA and a 1.096 WHIP with Philadelphia’s Triple-A squad in 2017.

As a reliever that Detroit can stash in Toledo or utilize out of the Major League bullpen on Opening Day, Beato is an intriguing potential depth addition.
