
The Houston Astros signed veteran reliever Joe Smith to a 2-year deal Wednesday adding depth to their bullpen.
Smith posted a 3.33 ERA last season in 59 games. Along the way, he struck out 71 batters and walked 10 over the span of 54 innings. In his career eh has 44-28 record with a 2.97 ERA.
Per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, Smith had this to say as to why he signed with the Astros:
"“They have the best chance to win the World Series,” Smith said of the Astros while being introduced at a news conference on Thursday."
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the two-year deal is valued at $14 million. Smith joins Rule 5 draftee Anthony Gose alongside Ken Giles, Will Harris and Chris Devenski in the Astros bullpen.
