Detroit Tigers: Bats show improvement against White Sox

The Detroit Tigers capped off a series victory over the Chicago White Sox with a 4-3 win on Sunday afternoon.

Detroit’s series against division rivals Chicago was meant to be four games but was cut down to three after a rainout on Saturday.  The Tigers were able to take two of three from the White Sox, and in the process showed some promising improvement at the plate. Let’s take a look at how the Detroit Tigers’ bats were able to make over the weekend.

Detroit Tigers- Power Hitting Increase

The Tigers still rank dead last in the MLB in team HRs for 2019, but this weekend’s series did show some improvement when it came to the Detroit’s ability to launch the long ball. In Friday’s 7-3 loss, all three of Detroit’s runs came from solo home runs from Josh Harrison, Niko Goodrum, and Grayson Greiner. Gordon Beckham added another bomb to give the Tigers four homers in just three games.

The four long shots in the series against Chicago finally brought Detroit up to double digits on the season with a total of ten, but still, as mentioned before, last in the major leagues. One thing to note is that these home runs are coming from guys not particularly expected to be providing much of the power. Nicholas Castellanos and Miguel Cabrera are both still yet to get one over the fence in 2019, but luckily guys like Greiner and Beckham have been stepping up to provide much-needed power.

Detroit Tigers- Miguel Cabrera’s Production

Speaking of Miguel Cabrera, his lack of power this year is being made up for with his ability to still be productive at the plate. “Miggy” has six RBIs on the season, three of which came this weekend against the White Sox. Cabrera helped bring in two crucial runs in Thursday’s 9-7 win, one on an RBI single in the seventh and another on with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth. He notched another RBI single in the fourth inning on Sunday.

As mentioned before, Cabrera is having trouble finding his once deadly slugging game so far this season, but this weekend showed that Miguel is still a valuable producer for the Tigers’ offense. RBI singles and sacrifice flies helped push Detroit along to two big victories over the last four days. Tigers fans should not get down on Cabrera for his lack of firepower, but instead should be happy that the squad’s most decorated veteran is still finding ways to contribute in the clutch.
