Is Matt Manning The Next Detroit Tigers Ace?

Matt Manning was the last of Mize, Manning, and Skubal to make his major league debut, despite being the first one drafted of them. Manning was drafted 9th overall in the 2016 MLB draft out of Sheldon High School and didn’t make his MLB debut until June 17th, 2021. Though it took him 5 years to make the MLB he is only 23 and has shown signs that he could potentially be the next ace of the Detroit Tigers.

Manning made his MLB debut on June 17th, 2021 against the Los Angeles Angels. In that start he was actually pretty solid, finishing the night with, 5 IP | 4 H | 3 K | 2 BB | 2 ER, and this start basically summed up just about how Matts’s year went. He would give you about 5 innings a game and give up a few earned runs. But it wasn’t until after the all-star break where Matt Manning really showed Tigers fans what he is here to do.

Now yes, Manning did have his struggles just like all rookies do. But, what you got to look at is just how much he improved over the ASB. Manning added a whole new pitch to his arsenal in a matter of a week and got a better pitch mix which we will get into later.

One particular start that I think a lot of fans will go back and look at as the “Oh this was the game where Matt Manning tuned into Matt Manning”; was his start on August 27th, the offensive powerhouse Toronto Blue Jays. Let’s look at the numbers/
