We’re still waiting for Detroit Tigers president of baseball ops Scott Harris to hire his GM

At his introductory press conference on Sept. 20, new Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said he would hire a general manager at some point. Here we are a few weeks removed from that, and we’re still waiting to hear news regarding a GM hire.

Harris obviously has a lot on his plate right now. He officially took the reigns last Thursday, and has been sifting through this organization, looking for changes to make. His only meaningful change thus far was firing amateur scouting director Scott Pleis last weekend, with more moves likely to come.

Some moves could be made without an announcment, liking firing scouts. But we’re still waiting to for a GM to be hired. After all, we were promised an active offseason. We want news, darn it!

I kid. For all we know, there could be GM interviews happening right this moment. Harris could very well be in the process of finalizing the hire. But when will this hire actually be announced?

If I had to guess, it would be before the postseason ends, just based off how fast the Detroit Tigers moved in hiring Harris. Chris Ilitch fired Al Avila on Aug. 10, then hired Harris on Sept. 19. Harris probably wants to move fast, especially given that other teams are also looking to fill front office positions.

Harris will probably want to fill the GM position before filling any other vacant positions in the front office as well. It would make more sense to hire a GM before hiring the next amateur scouting director, for example.

And who knows what other shakeups Harris will make to the front office? This is going to be an overhaul, of course. Harris needs to get all the pieces in place up top before getting to the mess that is the current Detroit Tigers roster.

Of course, Harris has already made his first set of roster moves. It was just a DFA and a waiver claim, but it’s a start. There will surely be more to come. He is obviously a very busy man at the moment.
