The trade deadline is just a few weeks away, and Tigers fans are hopeful that the front office is going to go all-in and bring a haul to Detroit to help them get through the rest of the season and deep into the postseason.
The 40-man roster is full, so if the Tigers are going to have to make some sacrifices if they're going for a trade deadline splash. We could see these players get dumped one way or the other by the end of the month.
3 Tigers who will be off the 40-man roster by the trade deadline
Matt Manning
If you forgot Matt Manning was even on the 40-man roster, you're not alone. A former first-round draft pick that never panned out, he's become a complete afterthought this season. Manning last appeared in the majors last season, when he pitched five starts through May 19 between promotions and demotions, but he wasn't called back up for the rest of the year.
Even though Reese Olson and Casey Mize have both spent time on the IL and Jackson Jobe is out for the rest of the year with Tommy John, the Tigers have preferred to opt for Keider Montero, relievers for some early pitching chaos, and most recently veteran Dietrich Enns over Manning. He could be packaged in a trade at the deadline, or he could even see a swift DFA if the Tigers need the roster space.
Jace Jung
Jung could be Detroit's most valuable trade chip at the deadline if they swing for any huge moves. He hasn't panned out in the majors yet, but he's revamped his swing and has had an encouraging last few games at the plate, going 3-5 with a double, a homer, and two RBI on July 8, then 4-5 with a double and an RBI the next day.
The "former top prospect" label hasn't entirely lost its luster yet, even if the early returns from the majors have looked less than promising. If the Tigers are dealing with a team like the Pirates, who might move current third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes, or even the Diamondbacks for Eugenio Suárez, Jung might not be a guy who could get a 1:1 deal across, but he could be where the Tigers start.
Ryan Kreidler
There's almost no way Kreidler would pull any weight in a trade, and he would be even easier to cut outright to clear 40-man space than Manning. Tigers fans have no great love for the Quad-A utility man, who batted .105 with a .295 OPS in 17 games this season, when he started the season on the Opening Day roster after Wenceel Pérez's move to the IL.
While Kreidler has gone back to batting decently in Triple-A, he's gotten enough shots at the major league level that fans can say with some certainty that he's not going to be able to make it work there with the Tigers. With Justyn-Henry Malloy going up and down lately and expanding his defensive skillset to include the infield, the Tigers don't need Kreidler anymore.
