The Detroit Tigers are set to open spring training in less than two weeks, and no player has a larger cloud of uncertainty hanging over his head than Spencer Torkelson.
The Tigers signed second baseman Gleyber Torres to a one-year deal and announced Colt Keith's move to first base, leaving Torkelson without a home (in the infield, that is). It remains unclear where the Tigers stand on trading Torkelson at this time, but the former No. 1 overall pick's future in the Motor City hangs precariously in the balance.
Torkelson is still only 25 years old and has a remaining minor league option, so it's entirely possible that he starts the 2025 season in Triple-A Toledo. It's also entirely possible that he gets traded, given that he is only two years removed from a 31-homer season in 2023 and his value will only depreciate from here.
Bleacher Report has Spencer Torkelson trade idea for Tigers but without proper solution
Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly recently proposed a "win-win" trade that would send Torkelson to the San Francisco Giants, citing the Giants' need for power in their lineup and Torkelson's need for a fresh start with a new organization.
There's just one problem with Kelly's so-called "win-win" trade scenario, though. The benefits to Torkelson and the Giants are obvious; but what about the Tigers? The trade proposal conveniently neglects to include what the return for Detroit would be, probably because the Giants don't have much to offer.
The Tigers' biggest objectives heading into the offseason were upgrading the offense with a power bat and shoring up the pitching staff. They've more or less done the latter, especially after bringing Jack Flaherty back into the fold, and San Francisco doesn't really have anyone who can help them with the former (that's why they could use a bat like Torkelson's).
In the end, trading Torkelson to San Francisco is an intriguing thought, but not a fully baked one. The Tigers don't have to get rid of him, so they would be better off hanging onto him unless they find a trade partner who can help maximize his value and fulfill Detroit's roster needs.
