With Kevin McGonigle impressing for the Detroit Tigers early on and Max Clark looking really good in Triple-A to begin the year, it would be easy for one to think that Detroit’s prospect pipeline is buzzing. While it may seem that way, McGonigle and Clark do not tell the full story.
Looking at where all of Detroit’s top 30 prospects started the season forces one to realize that their prospect depth is not as deep as it seems. Outside of Clark and infielder Max Anderson in Triple-A, not many of the team’s top prospects are knocking on the big league door.
Tigers do not have as much prospect depth as it may seem
A third of the Tigers' top-30 prospects are on the IL to start 2026, and their development will be delayed as a result. They have so much promising talent in the system that it would be a shame if injuries delay their potential arrival in the big leagues by haltering their development.
After Anderson, the next prospect who is listed as starting the year in Triple-A is Ty Madden. It feels a bit odd thinking of him as a prospect, considering he made his big league debut back in 2024 before injuries derailed his 2025 campaign. He could play a big role for the team if he has to fill in for an injured starter, and Justin Verlander’s early IL stint makes that seem like a distinct possibility.
Basically, McGonigle and Clark could end up making it seem like a youth wave is arriving in Detroit all of a sudden, but that just doesn’t seem to be the case.
Other potential rookies who could be called up include catcher Eduardo Valencia, who is in Triple-A. Infielder Trei Cruz will also start the year in Toledo.
Maybe a player like infielder John Peck could make the jump straight from Double-A to the big leagues like McGonigle did, and Peck certainly hit well enough in spring training to turn some heads, but it’s probably best for Detroit to be patient and not rush anyone up.
It’s not the best sign when there aren’t a ton of prospects who seem ready to make the jump to the big leagues, but given the fact that McGonigle and Clark may both very well play a huge role in 2026, maybe they have exhausted their prospect quota for the season.
