Detroit Tigers fans have suffered through Tarik Skubal trade speculation for months, but Wednesday delivered a crystal clear report in the opposite direction that had these fans beaming from ear to ear. The Athletic's Los Angeles Dodgers insider Fabian Ardaya shot down the notion that the Tigers might look to trade Skubal this season, so long as Detroit keeps winning.
After pointing out that the Tigers so far have a great chance to make the postseason and a good chance to win the division, Ardaya didn't beat around the bush about the likelihood (or lack thereof, in this case) of Detroit dealing away its ace.
"It would be a stunning slap in the fans’ face to see the Tigers entertain moving Skubal in the middle of a season in which they appear to be in contention, even if they believe Skubal would walk in free agency," Ardaya wrote.

Ardaya's report had to feel good for any Tigers fan to read, but at the same time, Detroit's fan base would be forgiven if it collectively can't fully trust any insider's reassurances about Skubal's destiny for the rest of the season.
More promising and impactful have been the examples of Skubal himself looking like a Tiger lifer, like when he refused a fan's request to sign a Yankees hat this past offseason. That rocked.
On other occasions during interviews, Skubal's been unafraid to express his loyalty to the Tigers and desire to remain with the organization for as long as possible.
Tigers fans are emotionally conflicted over Tarik Skubal
It has to be tough for Tigers fans to deal with the Skubal situation, knowing full well that his future in Detroit remains in serious doubt beyond the current campaign. A good example of fans' inner conflict over Skubal came to light during the recent press conference for Kevin McGonigle's extension.
As fans watched Skubal playfully joking with McGonigle about taking the team out to dinner, fans should have been rejoicing with uncontrollable mirth about the franchise's present superstar and future superstar sharing an iconic moment.
Instead, these same fans were hit with the dreaded reminder that Skubal and McGonigle won't likely be teammates past this season, meaning that there will be no overlap between their primes, an era that might have brought great prosperity to the franchise.
For now, Tigers fans are trying their best to appreciate every Skubal start and hope for a run to the World Series this season, which would do much to assuage the pain of what's to come, and who knows, maybe present a miraculous set of circumstances to avoid that sorry fate altogether.
