Jack White has hilariously frank reaction to Tigers’ Comerica Park name change

For the past 26 years, the Detroit Tigers’ home has been called "Comerica Park." This hasn’t exactly been all that controversial, given that companies and corporations having naming rights isn’t rare.

At the time, however, Tigers fans were upset that the name went from “Tiger Stadium” to being named after a bank. It took a little getting used to, but eventually fans warmed up to the change. Unfortunately, there’s a new bank in charge.

On Monday, Fifth Third Bank, after its $12 billion merger with Comerica (the company), unveiled a much-anticipated new name for Comerica Park that will take effect in 2027. And it’s about as unoriginal as you’d expect.

Fifth Third Park is the new name for Comerica, and fans are pretty upset with the news. One fan with a particularly large platform may have had the best reaction that encapsulated how every Tigers fan feels about the name change. Detroit musician Jack White of the White Stripes is actually a huge Tigers fan and is often seen at Comerica supporting his favorite baseball team. And he’s not happy with the selected name change.

White took to Instagram to share his blunt disgust for the name change, stating that he won’t ever call it Fifth Third Park, but rather it’s going to be Tiger Stadium to him from now on.

"I despise the new name… As far as I’m concerned wherever the Detroit Tigers play I’m calling ‘Tiger Stadium’ I don’t have the patience or desire to comprehend what banks have to do with the baseball game I’m attending."

The famous musician from Detroit went on to joke that the record label headquarters that he co-founded named Third Man Records Building is going to go by a new name when he makes a bank pay for the naming rights: Fifth Third Man Records Building.

Obviously he’s not the only one who hates the new name but he has the biggest platform and he is speaking for all Detroiters and Tigers fans. This new name stinks.

Tigers fans are less than pleased with “Fifth Third Park”

Everyone knew the name change was coming and there was a little hope that Fifth Third Bank would feed into the fans’ requests for it to go back to its roots. There was a big movement for “Tiger Stadium presented by Fifth Third Bank” or something to that effect, but the Cincinnati-based bank selfishly decided to name it after itself.

Plus, there’s already a park named after the bank representing the Tigers. Fifth Third Field in Toledo is the home of the Mud Hens — the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate.

At this point, why stop there? Let’s just name every single park in the Tigers’ organization after the bank and rename the team the Detroit Fifth Thirds or the Detroit Tigers presented by Fifth Third Bank. That just rolls off the tongue, right?

As you could imagine, fans are angry.

And that’s just a handful of the literally hundreds of negative responses to the name change.

It looks like everyone is in agreement that the stadium is going to still be called “Comerica Park” or even “Tiger Stadium” no matter what name is actually plastered on the front of it.
