None of Bleacher Report's Tigers trade proposals should happen under any circumstance

Pretty bad.

Tarik Skubal trade proposals have become the bane of Tigers' fans existences this offseason. Some are better than others, of course, but a lot of them come from Dodgers, Mets, or Yankees fans who clearly haven't done a lot of research and/or overestimate their own farm systems and/or think the Tigers can be suckered into taking a bad deal.

Sometimes a trade proposal is so outrageous that you just can't let it silde. In Bleacher Report's case, nearly every single one of their Tigers trade proposals (including but not limited to Skubal) falls under that umbrella. They include:

  • No. 1 Tigers prospect Kevin McGonigle to the Red Sox in exchange for Jarren Duran, Connelly Early, and Mikey Romero
  • Skubal to the Yankees for Cam Schlittler, Jasson Domínguez, and Carlos Legrange
  • Skubal and Parker Meadows to the Mets for Carson Benge and Jonah Tong
  • Skubal to the Rangers for Sebastian Walcott

Respectfully, these are terrible.

There's a lot that these packages don't take into account, but the most glaring blindspot is this: if MacKenzie Gore could go from the Nationals to the Rangers in exchange for five prospects, in what world would 1-3 players cut it to take a two-time Cy Young winner from a contender?

Bleacher Report's Tigers trade proposals for Tarik Skubal, Kevin McGonigle are ludicrous

The only one we could see being even a little bit realistic is McGonigle to the Red Sox — Scott Harris has insisted that no player is untouchable — but that guy seems just about as untouchable as it gets. He's earning comps to Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Brice Turang, and José Ramírez without having broken Double-A yet. That's the kind of guy the Tigers want to keep around as long as they possibly can.

On the Skubal side of things, the Tigers have reportedly already told the Yankees point-blank that they do not have what it takes to pry Skubal away from Detroit. Jon Heyman noted this week that the Mets are under the impression that it would take Nolan McLean plus more to get him, so even New York's highest-ranked position player prospect and Tong wouldn't suffice.

A 1-for-1 with the Rangers and Sebastian Walcott is perhaps the most laughable. No one's enamored with Javy Báez, but they have other options they already trust at shortstop. And again, one prospect would never be enough.

The Tigers are reportedly not naming their price on Skubal. They're letting other teams come to them and give them their best offer. That's the right way to go about it. If any of these packages have or will come close to reality, then it's no surprise Skubal has stayed put.
