Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch is the right man for the job.
The Detroit Tigers may not have had a huge off-season, but they have been busy figuring out ways to build out their roster for the 2024 season. On top of that, the Tigers were able to take care of something that may seem like a menial thing but is huge for the long run. They extended their manager.
The Detroit Tigers announcing that they had extended A.J. Hinch for a "long time" and that he and Scott Harris would be working with each other for the foreseeable future was certainly a nice touch. Even if the exact details were not announced, there has to be an excellent sense of security in knowing that Hinch will be in the Motor City to be the skipper of this team.
On top of that, Hinch is the right man for the job. When he was hired, it was a steal, just as much as this extension is to keep him in Detroit to see things through. The rebuild has been treacherous. Let's not sidestep around it. But, for Detroit, having someone like Hinch at the helm will provide comfort as the team tries to end this horrendous rebuild.
Hinch will be able to see things through on this rebuild, which is the biggest win of all of this, but when the Tigers are able to reach that point one day, there will be a ton to like about what Hinch brings to the table. He's got that experience as a manager in the postseason after his time in Houston as manager of the Astros organization.
Hinch can manage a winner, and he's also proven that he can manage a struggling team. He finds a way to extract things from his players, getting them to stay bought in, even in the middle of a tough stretch, amid a season written off nearly before it starts. The Tigers trust Hinch, and rewarding him with the extension just proves that.
It may just seem like a formality or a move that was expected. But it's a big deal, as he's the right man for the job and is going to be able to do a lot of good things for this team moving forward. As the Tigers (hopefully) try and keep moving in the right direction, it will be huge to have Hinch helping bridge the gap toward being a competing team once again.
Extending Hinch is one of the biggest highlights of this off-season, if not the biggest.
