Detroit Tigers to play Phillies in inaugural 2024 Spring Breakout
Detroit Tigers to take on Phillies in Spring Breakout
Detroit Tigers to take on Phillies in Spring Breakout next March.
The Detroit Tigers may not be thinking about Spring Training quite yet, but Major League Baseball announced some news about spring ball. Next March, teams will participate in a "Spring Breakout" series where their best and brightest prospects will be able to take on the best and brightest from other organizations under the spotlight.
It's not just another spring training game with the Detroit Tigers mixing in some at-bats from younger prospects on the cusp, but rather, it's seeing those young stars compete against other young stars who will soon be the future of this league. The league has announced that each team will come up with a 20- to 25-man roster of their best prospects to compete in a game throughout March.
These will be seven-inning match-ups paired with in-stadium doubleheaders to get some Spring Training games in as well. It will allow some of these prospects to get a taste of the spotlight while also suiting up for a real game in Tigers uniforms against another team's best prospects.
It may not be an actual MLB game in the 2024 season, but it is a part of Spring Training and a remarkable opportunity for these prospects to go out and get a taste of the big leagues. It has to be a one-of-a-kind opportunity, even if this "Spring Breakout" series will continue moving forward.
From the sounds of it, roster construction will be pretty loose. The teams participating will be able to choose a mix of players who are on the cusp of the big leagues, as well as the guys still down in rookie ball if they so choose. The Tigers will be able to bring in players on the cusp like Jace Jung, as well as 2023 draftees like Max Clark or Max Anderson.
As for the Tigers, specifically, they will match up against the Philadelphia Phillies organization on Saturday, March 16th, at Joker Merchant Stadium in Lakeland. Rosters will be made available closer to that date once we get off and running on Spring Training. So, fans who are interested in this should make sure they keep an eye out for more details down the line.
They will have a 1:05 PM ET first-pitch against former Tigers architect Dave Dombrowski and his Phillies organization as they look to see how their farm system is faring. Who knows, there could be some new faces down on the farm by then.
