Jace Jung, playing in his 10th MLB game since making his debut with the Detroit Tigers on Aug. 16, picked up two hits in the Tigers' 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox – and he did it with a very special fan looking on from the stands at Guaranteed Rate Field.
It was older brother, Texas Rangers All-Star third baseman Josh Jung, who happened to be in town and had the night off ahead of Texas' three-game series against the White Sox beginning Tuesday. Josh had the unique and rare opportunity to watch his younger brother play in an MLB uniform without competing against him, and he wasn't going to miss it.
“Might not ever get this opportunity again,” Josh told Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. “Besides playing against each other and competing, I don't know if this will ever happen again. The fact that it worked out and he just debuted a couple weeks ago, it's super special.”
Josh was able to enjoy simply being a fan of his brother during Monday's game, and he could be seen proudly recording the action on his cell phone from a suite. Later that night, Josh posted a photo with Jace on Instagram taken on the field before the game with a caption that read, "Not everyday you get to sit in the stands and watch the little bro get a big league hit and make some sick plays in the field. Keep going kid!"
Jace Jung picks up two hits, powers Tigers to four-game sweep of White Sox
In his first at-bat in the second inning of Monday's game, Jace smacked a single to center field. He went 2-for-4 on the night, also hitting a go-ahead RBI single in the seventh. He also displayed his defensive prowess in the fourth inning, making a sliding stop on a Korey Lee grounder at third base and throwing him out at first.
The win finished off the Tigers' four-game sweep of the White Sox and brought Detroit (66-66) to .500 for the first time since June. The Tigers will look to continue their march toward an 81-win season – their first since 2016 – as they return home to host the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
