Tigers fans will love top draft pick already putting in work with Jackson Jobe

Detroit sure does like drafting high school pitchers out of Oklahoma.

It's been less than a month since Owen Hall joined the Detroit Tigers organization, but he's already fitting in quite nicely.

Drafted in the second round (No. 49 overall) of the 2024 MLB Draft, Hall was one of three high school players selected by the Tigers on Day 1. He opted to forgo his college commitment to Vanderbilt –where he was the top pitching recruit in this year's class – and sign with the Tigers for a $1,750,000 bonus, just below the $1,893,700 slot value for the No. 49 overall pick.

Hall is the latest in a series of Oklahoma-born pitchers to come through the Tigers organization. He is from Edmund, the same hometown as former Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer, who works out at the same facility as Hall in the offseason. Hall also worked out with Tigers top pitching prospect and fellow Oklahoma native Jackson Jobe, who currently plays for Double-A Erie.

MLB Pipeline ranked Hall as the No. 74 prospect in this year's draft class. He relies heavily on his fastball – which sits at 93 to 94 mph and tops out at 98 mph – but offers a fairly robust pitch arsenal for his age that includes a slider, a curveball and a changeup.

While Hall may be a few years away from the big leagues, Jobe could factor into the Tigers' plans as early as 2025 – maybe even 2024, but there would likely have to be a disastrous injury in Detroit's starting rotation or a quick philosophical pivot for that to happen. The Oklahoma City native was Detroit's first-round pick (No. 3 overall) out of high school in 2021 after being named the Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year his senior season.

Detroit is one of a handful of teams with at least three prospects in the MLB top-30 rankings. Jobe is the No. 5 overall prospect in baseball, behind only Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood, Baltimore Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday, Tampa Bay Rays infielder Junior Caminero and Washington outfielder Dylan Crews in the Top 100. Jobe is the highest-ranked pitcher.
