When Tarik Skubal went down with an elbow injury just a few weeks back, the expectation was that he'd miss at least 2-3 months to undergo surgery. However, Skubal's now-patented NanoScope procedure has moved that timeline up considerably.
The Tigers ace has already thrown off a mound at Comerica Park, coinciding with Detroit's woeful play of late. While there's plenty of risk that comes with bringing Skubal back this early, the Tigers are willing to overlook all of it, assuming he receives the necessary approval from the training staff. It turns out the two-time AL Cy Young winner may not even need a rehab start in the minor leagues before facing MLB hitters once again.
From Will Carroll’s latest substack (this part isn’t paywalled so sharing it):

“That’s right - after two mound sessions, Skubal, the Tigers, and his advisors are discussing whether a rehab assignment is necessary, meaning he could be back as soon as next week”
If Skubal returns from his ailment successfully, it could alter how we look at the specific elbow injury he suffered entirely, and it couldn't come at a better time for the ailing Tigers.
Tarik Skubal's injury update gives Tigers fans a ray of hope
There hasn't been much to get excited about for Tigers fans so far this season. They're 7.5 games back of the Guardians in the AL Central — good for fourth place in a winnable division — and lost a prove-it series to Cleveland just this week. The return of Skubal, who is not just the best pitcher on the planet but also an important locker room presence, could be just what the doctor ordered for a team that's had its fair share of miserable injury luck in 2026.
In Skubal's absence, the Tigers' rotation hasn't been up to the task, whether it's Framber Valdez declaring baseball war on the Boston Red Sox or Jack Flaherty's inability to find the strike zone against any MLB-caliber hitter with a bat in their hands. It's grim around these parts, folks.
This would be an absolutely astonishing turn of events for Tarik Skubal owners ⬇️

His team is discussing whether to even put him on a rehab assignment. Crazy https://t.co/YnZw64GQYG
I’m here for it. Skubal is like an astronaut going to the Moon for the first time ever.

Skubal alone won't change the Tigers' fortunes. He can only pitch every fifth day at best, after all, and there's a good chance his return comes with some limitations. However, even having their best pitcher back in the fold has given a fanbase on the edge of insanity a little bit of hope.
Can Tarik Skubal's return propel Tigers in the AL Central race?
With Skubal back in the fold, the Tigers' rotation suddenly looks a lot more formidable. Add in the recent return of Casey Mize, along with the looming comebacks of Gleyber Torres and Javier Baez, and all of a sudden, the Tigers could be cooking with gas.
Yes, it's been a terrible season so far for the Tigers. We're also just under a third of the way through the MLB regular season. There's plenty of time left for a team like Detroit — which was just one win away from reaching the ALCS last season, mind you — to make a run. Whether they actually accomplish that feat could determine more than just their future, but also Skubal's. The Tigers' ace could be a prime trade candidate if Detroit is still sitting in the middle of the back of the AL Central when the deadline comes around.
For now, though, Skubal is doing all he can to help his team win. The Tigers are 2-12 since Skubal went down with his elbow injury. All of that could change in a hurry.
