Everything is coming up Kevin McGonigle for the Detroit Tigers during spring training. McGonigle was not included in Detroit's latest round of spring training roster cuts, suggesting that there is a real chance that he makes the team's Opening Day roster. The Tigers have often taken a cautious approach with the graduation of their top prospects, but the circumstances surrounding the 2026 season are why McGonigle could be the exception.

It's a season that could be Tarik Skubal's last year in Detroit, and the signing of Framber Valdez last month suggests that the Tigers aren't trying to waste the opportunity in front of them. To a lesser extent, that could also be why the Tigers brought Justin Verlander back for a farewell tour while stabilizing the backend of their starting rotation.

It's very clear that the chips are pushed to the middle of the table for the Tigers in 2026. It's why examining McGonigle's role on the roster will be a fascinating case study. Largely because his hype, which has been backed up by his talent, has already cast lofty expectations for his arrival.

The latest comes from Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller. Tasked with identifying the X-factor for each team ahead of Opening Day, Miller points to McGonigle as the player for the Tigers.

Kevin McGonigle could be the Tigers' 2026 X-Factor, but there's risk involved with that expectation.

On one hand, yes, McGonigle should be on the Tigers' Opening Day roster, and there's reason to believe he could be an important piece. McGonigle is one of the best 26 players in the organization, and through the lens of maximizing what could be Skubal's final year with the Tigers, that is why he needs to break camp with the team.

Nothing is wrong with this observation.

The concern is that, for as great as McGonigle's prospect profile is, he's still a prospect. There's little doubt that McGonigle will ascend toward superstar status, but it's not a guarantee that it will happen in 2026. That is where the curse lies for the Tigers.

If McGonigle struggles and is forced to have more time at the Triple-A level, that could dramatically alter how the Tigers are viewed in October. The Tigers' offense broke down toward the playoffs last year, and rather than protect themselves against that reality this season, they are hoping that McGonigle is the answer right away.

McGonigle being a dude right away would certainly be the best-case scenario for the Tigers. But if he isn't, that could be problematic for the 2026 season.
