Kevin McGonigle making the Detroit Tigers' Opening Day roster is certainly the headliner for the Detroit Tigers ahead of Thursday's season opener against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, but the Tigers may have quietly admitted that the end of the line may be approaching for Parker Meadows.

With Jace Jung and Wenceel Pérez also being optioned to Triple-A Toledo, the Tigers confirmed that Meadows will break camp with the team.

Since making his debut with the Tigers in 2023, Meadows has yet to play in over 100 games in a season. After posting a 110 wRC+ in 298 plate appearances in 2024, the hope for the Tigers was that Meadows could cement his standing in center field during the 2025 season. Instead, injuries limited the former second-round pick to 58 games.

When he was healthy last year, Meadows' production left much to be desired. He slashed .215/.291/.330 with a wRC+ of 75. Still, entering spring training this year, the expectation was that Meadows' spot on the Tigers' Opening Day roster. What changed was the fact that the 26-year-old posted a wRC+ of 63 in 52 plate appearances this spring.

As the Tigers were looking for ways to fit McGongigle on the roster, Meadows' roster spot turned into a question mark. His struggles during spring training certainly didn't help his cause, either.

The 2026 season figures to be a decisive one for Meadows, who turns 27 in November and has one minor-league option remaining. Ideally, Scott Harris and Co. will need to know by the end of the season if Meadows has a long-term role in Detroit. He's still under team control through the 2030 season, but the lack of options may not work in his favor if he can't figure things out offensively.

Initially, it would seem that the plan is for Meadows to open the season as the Tigers' primary center fielder. That scenario will likely have Javier Baez at shortstop and McGonigle at third base.

The Tigers have made no secret that their chips are pushed to the middle of the table in 2026. Meadows shouldn't be given an extended runway. If he struggles, the solution may be moving Baez to center field with McGonigle sliding over to shortstop, and Zach McKinstry taking over at third base — a scenario that likely would seal Meadows' fate with the Tigers.
