The Detroit Tigers had a tough decision to make on top prospect Kevin McGonigle this spring. They opted for the popular decision and put him on the 2026 Opening Day roster, but whether they did that or optioned him to the minor leagues, both situations had notable ramifications for the Tigers.
Now that Detroit opted to put McGonigle on the Opening Day roster, they will be the beneficiary of the Prospect Promotion Incentive (PPI) program which was designed to incentivize teams to add prospects to the big league roster. The program rewards teams by awarding them a draft pick if they promote a prospect to the big league roster to begin the season and that player wins the Rookie of the Year award or finishes top-three in MVP or Cy Young award voting in his first three seasons by giving the team an extra draft pick.Â
Tigers front office has tough choice on McGonigle
This was meant to avoid what happened to players like Kris Bryant. Back in 2015 with the Chicago Cubs, he clearly deserved to make the team’s roster but Chicago kept him in the minors to begin the year to delay his free agency by one season.
It was a manipulative move that tons of teams did with their prospects. But if the Tigers had decided to start McGonigle in the minors fans, would not have cried foul in the same way.
The guy’s ceiling is so high, but he’s just 21 years old and has never played above Double-A. He put up solid numbers in spring training this year, but it’s not like he was absolutely undeniable to the point that excluding him from the roster would be some sort of blasphemy. The Tigers are a playoff team, they aren't desperate.
Optioning him to Triple-A would've given him more time to develop while at the same time ensuring that they have another year of control. Based on how the front office handled things with Tarik Skubal this past offseason, some figured they were probably going to want to delay McGonigle’s free agency over the possibility of an extra draft pick.
But many believe there’s a good chance the young shortstop could win American League Rookie of the Year honors, so they're now eyeing that prize after starting his service time clock.
It wasn't an easy choice, but it's a nice little change of pace from the Tigers, who shifted gears this offseason and went into "win now" mode. They've continued that with their decision making this spring.
McGonigle is the culmination of that, and hopefully he rewards the team after they've placed so much faith in him as he earned his keep.
