Our long wait is finally over: the Tigers play meaningful baseball today in San Diego.
Tarik Skubal will be on the mound against Nick Pivetta and a Padres team that can never be underestimated. Detroit's lineup will look much the same as it did this time last year, but with one key addition. Tigers No. 1 prospect Kevin McGonigle is getting his MLB debut.
The order of AJ Hinch's Opening Day lineup is mostly unsurprising (he employed the very same one against the Rockies on Monday), though Carpenter returning to the leadoff spot after Colt Keith, Gleyber Torres, and even Parker Meadows spent most of the back half of the 2025 season there is a welcome change.
Gleyber Torres slots in at second, Keith bats third, Riley Greene will hit cleanup, Spencer Torkelson leads the heart of the order, and then there's McGonigle hitting sixth. Dillon Dingler, Meadows, and Javy Báez round things out.
The starting positions are far more interesting, and it speaks to the defensive versatility that's quickly becoming a core part of the Tigers' identity.

Tigers' Opening Day lineup features Kevin McGonigle and a world of possibilities
We should expect Hinch to play with both this lineup and his players' starting positions throughout the season, as he rarely employed the exact same order for more than a few games in a row last year.
There are a lot of ways this could go. You could DH Carpenter, move Keith to third, put McGonigle at shortstop, and Báez in the outfield. Depending on how much Carpenter has actually managed to improve his defense over the offseason, that may be how things shake out more often than not.
And, of course, there are some big names that we aren't seeing on this list. Zach McKinstry and Matt Vierling both figure to be major parts of this offense. They're not just late-inning insurance; they'll get their own starts too, and anywhere Hinch needs them.
The way the Tigers have built this team allows Hinch to play a little bit of 4D chess. There are a few staples — Greene, Torkelson, Dingler, Keith — but everyone has bought into this "one for all, all for one" mentality. It keeps fans on our toes in the best way.
Fingers are crossed for a big hit for McGonigle today. He'll be the star of the show, so hopefully the nerves aren't getting to him.
