Kevin McGonigle was in the Detroit Tigers' Opening Day lineup and did very little to quell the lofty expectations that were cast upon him during spring training. After an offseason where the Tigers didn't make a free-agent splash for an impact bat, it was hard for some fans (and talent evaluators) not to look to McGonigle as the missing piece.
Sure, Tarik Skubal was terrific in the Tigers' 8-2 victory on Thursday night over the San Diego Padres, but McGonigle stole the show. Not to be outdone by the RBI double that served as the first major league hit, McGongigle collected a hit in each of his first three plate appearances, including another double. The Tigers' top prospect finished the day going 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI.
Opening Day overreactions have become a bit for Major League Baseball, and after Thursday's debut, McGonigle certainly set the stage for Tigers fans to expect big things this season. As is the case with a 162-game regular season, there is some need for caution.
The Detroit Tigers just need Kevin McGonigle to be Kevin McGonigle.
No, Tigers' president of baseball operations Scott Harris wasn't taking the fun out of McGonigle's debut on Thursday. It was special. But, he did stress the importance of how the Tigers view McGonigle and his role on the 2026 roster.
“The other factor is, you think about us as an organization right now, we don’t need him to be the savior. We don’t need him to carry us. We just need him to help us. This roster is pretty darn good with him or without him. We just think it’s better with him on it. That’s why he’s here.”
Say what you will about Harris and how he has gone about handling the Tigers' contention window, he's not exactly wrong with how the Tigers are handling McGonigle. There is no need to force the issue.
McGonigle opened the season hitting sixth for the Tigers, and that is the right spot for him. If he's who many expect him to be, he will easily find his way to the top of the starting lineup. For now, Tigers fans, enjoy the ride. The Professor is here, and that's a very good thing for the Tigers moving forward.
