If the weekend series was meant to serve as the first test of the Detroit Tigers' legitimacy as World Series contenders, they passed with flying colors. The Tigers took two of three games against the Cubs, solidifying their claim to being the best team in Major League Baseball.
It was a series that had the feel of a potential World Series preview, and the Tigers' social media team delivered with an all-time troll of the Cubs after Sunday's victory in the rubber match.
For now, Detroit has the last word. But man, when was the last time the Tigers were in this kind of position to perfectly execute spot-on trash talk against a fellow playoff contender? Feels like forever.

Tigers win series vs Cubs then unleash social media troll after Sunday's result
As has become tradition for the Cubs after victories at Wrigley Field, they play their infamous "Go Cubs, Go" anthem to celebrate the victory. There was no celebrating for the Cubs this weekend as they looked like the inferior team against the Tigers. The Tigers had to make sure the Cubs were aware of that fact, posting a shredded "W" flag with a Tiger lurking in the background.
Following the weekend's events, the Tigers remain the best team in baseball with a mark of 43-24. The Cubs, meanwhile, have fallen to two games behind Detroit for baseball's best record. The New York Mets, meanwhile, leapfrogged the Cubs, sitting only a half-game back of the Tigers. The Tigers won't see the Mets until the first week of September, when the two teams play a three-game set in New York.
If anything, this weekend proved that the backbone of the Tigers' success this season is their starting rotation. Tarik Skubal dominated the Cubs on Friday night, with the help of some incredible defense. Not to be outdone, Jack Flaherty was just as dominant on Sunday afternoon. Flaherty tossed six scoreless innings against the Cubs on Sunday, striking out nine batters along the way.
Beyond their pitching, the Tigers also proved to be better at the little things over the weekend, including taking advantage of the Cubs' poor baserunning. Of note, Kerry Carpenter had an excellent throw from right field during Sunday's game, catching Cubs' left fielder Ian Happ out at home.

Following their series against the Cubs, the Tigers will need to avoid a trap series against the Baltimore Orioles. A three-game set against the O's in Baltimore begins on Tuesday. Despite their disappointing start to the season, the Orioles have won seven of their last nine games.
The need to keep pole troll position against their opponents, after all.
