On Friday, Ty Madden was hit on the forearm with a come backer off the bat of Blue Jays outfielder Yohendrick Piñango. He was attended to by trainers and taken off the mound, leaving the Tigers to piece together a true bullpen game after losing their long reliever for the day.
Madden was emotional as he walked off the field, and no one could blame him. It was only his third major league appearance since coming off the IL.
Initial X-rays were negative, but Tigers fans held their breaths as he underwent further testing. He was officially placed back on the IL on Sunday with a forearm contusion.
This was the last thing the Tigers needed with their rotation as depleted as it is and their IL as long as it is. Given that there's no structural damage, we could remain optimistic for a minimum IL stint, but fans would be forgiven if they're not feeling particularly inclined to optimism right now.
On the bright side, Will Vest was activated off of the IL after a bought of forearm inflammation. Silver linings...?
Tigers Injury Updates: Kerry Carpenter making progress, Gleyber Torres may be on their last steps to return
Kerry Carpenter has been on the IL since May 10 with a left AC joint sprain, sustained when he crashed into the outfield wall trying to track down a Bobby Witt Jr. fly ball in Kansas City.
But Carpenter, who has been completing his rehab in Detroit, is optimistic that he at least won't be gone as long as he was when he sprained his right AC joint in 2023, which forced him to miss six weeks. He's been running and throwing, and while he expects to need a rehab assignment, he said he's progressing far more easily than he did in 2023.
Gleyber Torres, who has been out since May 6, could be getting close to the end of his stint. He's been in Lakeland ramping up but will return to Detroit to work out and get checked by team doctors. If everything looks good, his next step should be a rehab assignment.
Neither Carpenter nor Torres was hitting particularly well before they went down, but we'll take hitters with any kind of experience over the likes of Zack Short and Gage Workman right now. Torres coming back to bring some perspective to Detroit's still very young clubhouse (even younger with Torres and Javy Báez out) as they've struggled could help shake the Tigers out of this funk.
