Payroll implications (and struggles) give Tigers excuse to fully sell at trade deadline

The 2026 trade deadline will define Scott Harris' tenure as the Tigers' president of baseball operations. Whether or not he decides to trade Tarik Skubal, the return from a potential deal, the way the rest of the Tigers' season shakes out with or without their ace — all of that is in Harris' hands.

Detroit has lost five of six and can no longer get to .500 before the deadline. They're 6.5 games behind the AL Central's first place White Sox and four out of a Wild Card spot. There's pressure to sell now more than ever.

The latest rumors suggest that the Tigers might try to strike a balance: trade Skubal, but acquire a few extra pieces and keep trying to crawl out of the muck. But if they keep Skubal — whether because they truly believe in this team or can't find a deal to make selling him worthwhile — and try to add on top of him, there's an elephant in the room.

Cot's Contracts projects the Tigers' year-end Competitive Tax Balance payroll at $246.2 million, already over the $244 million luxury tax threshold. Adding players would come at a price that Chris Ilitch and the Tigers might not be willing to pay.

It was shocking that the Tigers even let themselves get this close to (and maybe even above) the luxury tax threshold in the first place, but it wasn't by accident. They knew they could lose their arbitration hearing against Skubal but signed Framber Valdez to a record-breaking deal anyway. They heavily deferred Justin Verlander's one-year salary to keep themselves just under the radar.

There's a world in which the Tigers could keep Skubal and trade off smaller expiring contracts, like Casey Mize's or Gleyber Torres', but neither seem likely to net players who could move the needle for Detroit beyond the deadline. That's where this gets tough to sift through.

All in all, the losing over the last week, coupled with this payroll implications, just gave Harris and ownership the best excuse yet to sell off as many costly assets as they can. It begins with Skubal. Then Mize. Then Torres. Then Kenley Jansen. Jack Flaherty and Kyle Finnegan are also options.

The Tigers flew close to the sun. If the week before the deadline transpired differently, they probably would've had little issue adding a bit more to the payroll. But now? Don't count on it. They'll be subracting.
