We've arrived at the point in the season where we know where everyone stands. The pretenders have been separated from the contenders. Reinforcements have arrived via trade deadline acquisitions. Now it's time to put the pedal to the medal for the stretch run. For the Detroit Tigers, their summer swoon seems to be in the rearview mirror, and the club is sharpening its teeth for a postseason run.

On Tuesday, we got to see what that might look like, with Detroit taking on the AL West-leading Houston Astros in a potential October preview. After fans packed the stands for the series opener, a 10-0 victory that was a treat for the Detroit faithful in every way, the atmosphere ratcheted up yet another notch for the middle game of the three-game set.

Tigers-Astros thriller had an electric playoff buzz to it with Tarik Skubal, Gleyber Torres delivering

This game featured a marquee matchup on the mound with Tigers ace Tarik Skubal squaring off against Houston's rotation leader Hunter Brown. The two stars are perhaps the two foremost contenders for the 2025 AL Cy Young award, ranking first and third in the American League in ERA, respectively.

Neither disappointed, either. Brown was threatened numerous times. Most notably, he wiggled out of a first and third jam with one out in the third inning after Gleyber Torres got doubled off first base after a Kerry Carpenter lineout to end the inning. In the fifth, a leadoff triple by Zach McKinstry would be for naught as Brown yet again survived unscathed, ultimately ending the inning by getting Torres to fly out.

Despite a couple of sticky situations, Brown delivered six scoreless frames for Houston; meanwhile, Skubal handled Houston's hitters with relative ease. Despite the presence of stars like Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña, Skubal cruised most of the night, tossing seven scoreless innings and racking up 10 strikeouts, reaching 200 K's on the year. The crowd was going insane.

With both starters out and the game still in a scoreless tie, it might've seemed as if the advantage was tilting in the Astros' favor, given the inconsistency of Detroit's bullpen throughout the season. Instead, both units would remain unscathed, as inning by inning passed without a breakthrough.

The crowd pulsated with electricity as the battle raged on. A standout performance by Will Vest, who logged two scoreless innings, brought Detroit up in the bottom of the 10th. With star closer Josh Hader on the shelf, Houston had to turn to Kaleb Ort in a critical moment.

Ort would load the bases via walks, bringing up Torres, who had featured prominently in Detroit's earlier failed threats. At this point, there wasn't a single soul in Comerica Park who wasn't on their feet. Ort fed Torres a healthy diet of breaking balls, running the count full.

With the game on the line, Ort uncorked yet another sweeper that started on the outside corner and dove further down and away into the dirt. Torres spat on the pitch, as the lumber never left his shoulder during the at-bat. With ball four in the books, Torres literally walked it off for Detroit, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

With that, Comerica Park erupted in joyful exuberance, with the Tigers coming away with a hard-fought victory that showed just how well-prepared the club is to rise to the occasion. Who said walk-off walks weren't thrilling? Tigers fans made it seem like they just witnessed a walk-off grand slam.

Now with two straight shutouts against a potential playoff foe in the books, we've gotten a real glimpse at how October baseball may look in Detroit in 2025, and we absolutely need more of it.
