The "controversy" that keeps on giving is Tarik Skubal and the Detroit Tigers having beef with Chicago White Sox pitcher Mike Vasil. Skubal and Vasil exchanged words last Friday, in a moment that was honestly pretty great for all parties. Skubal was clearly trying to breathe life into the Tigers, and Vasil, well, it's hard to be mad at someone who who thinks they are Harry Potter.
Actually, dare we say, Southside Harry Potter?
Regardless, it was one of those moments that are good for baseball. Skubal is one of the best pitchers in the world and he's putting renewed life into a rivalry with the White Sox that has been dormant for quite some time.
Tigers fans will likely get a laugh out of Vasil's explanation of the incident. Vasil was speaking with Chicago's broadcast crew during their series against the Cleveland Guardians, and well, it went as you would expect.

"He's obviously one of the best pitchers in the game... he's probably like who is this dude?
At the same time, I'm thinking, you know, I'm the Wizard...I can't just back down." 🤣 pic.twitter.com/7SbrL1WQSx
Even the Tigers have to appreciate Mike Vasil's dedication to the bit
Vasil was in an awkward spot with the White Sox at the start of this season. He led Chicago in innings pitched last season, and as they sifted through veteran arm after veteran arm, he's become a clubhouse presence. The problem is that he's recovering from Tommy John surgery, and will miss the entire season. It's odd to see an injured player stick around with the team, but as Vasil pointed out, wizards don't just back down.
Overall, there's respect for someone's desire to stick to bit. It's probably why there's no true hard feelings between Skubal and the White Sox pitcher.
Though, it's still funny to imagine being Skubal, fresh off two American League Cy Young Awards and trying to carry the Tigers back into the contention, walking off the mound and seeing some random dude pointing a wand at him and shouting.
If nothing else, it was a needed sign of life for the Tigers. The first three months of the 2026 season have been exhausting for Detroit. The hope is that the Tigers have turned a corner, and become closer to being the team that had so much fun during the regular season last year. The moment between Skubal and Vasil was a step toward that direction.
