The Detroit Tigers travel to Oakland tonight for the start of the American League Division Series (actually, they’ve already traveled there; it would be a little late to just leave now). They weren’t able to earn home field advantage for the ALDS, Detroit finished three games behind the Athletics in the AL standings (I’m sure the presence of the Houston Astro’s in Oakland’s division didn’t skew the records at all), but they could effectively steal that advantage by winning one of the first two games on the road.

It’s not going to be an easy place to play – A’s fans are going to turn up the volume inside the park – but the Tigers appear (on paper, at least) to have the players to out-gun Oakland.

When we last met (August 26-29):

Oakland bludgeoned Detroit in a four-game series at Comerica Park at the end of August, knocking Tigers pitchers around to the tune of 34 total runs in four games. If it wasn’t for a four-run ninth-inning rally in the finale against closer Grant Balfour – capped off by a three-run walk-off home run by Torii Hunter – the Tigers would been swept in the worst way. Fortunately, we can cling to this as our most recent memory against the A’s.
