When We Last Met

Before Friday, it had been a long time since the Detroit Tigers faced the Minnesota Twins, and actually, some could point to the two teams’ last meeting as a turning point for the Tigers season.

Detroit took the first game of that series, but on July 10, the Tigers blew six-run lead to lose, 8-6, in the bottom of the ninth. The Twins also took the next two games, and the Tigers limped into the All-Star break with an even 44-44 record.

On Friday, it was much of the same as Detroit fell to Minnesota, 7-1.

Pitching Matchup

The Detroit Tigers will once again turn to Alfredo Simon to help stop the bleeding, but the right-hander hasn’t done much of that lately. He has allowed at least five runs in three of his last four outings. Simon also has a shutout in that span, but even with that, he has yielded 19 runs in his last 22 frames

For the season, Simon is 12-9 with a 4.94 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 105 strikeouts in 160 1/3 innings.

The Twins will send right-hander Phil Hughes to the mound. He is 10-8 with a 4.49 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 85 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings this season.

Like Simon, Hughes has really struggled lately. In his last three outings, Hughes has allowed 15 runs and has a 9.88 ERA. Over that stretch, opponents are hitting .381 with a 1.181 OPS against him. It could be another long, offensive game on Tuesday night.
