Miguel Cabrera's gift from the A's...is a bottle of wine?
Miguel Cabrera may have just gotten the worst gift of his retirement tour.
Miguel Cabrera has been on farewell/retirement tour all season long. Opposing teams have given him gifts as the Detroit Tigers visit their stadiums for the final time in Miggy's career.
These gifts are often team-specific, such as the Brewers giving him a cheesehead. But what the Oakland Athletics gave him prior to last night's game is not only cheap and shows a lack of effort, but it's also rather tone deaf.
The A's gave him a bottle of wine as a retirement gift. Yep, that's it. A single bottle of wine.
I mean, at least it's expensive? This Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon ranges from $80-90 depending on where you look. Points for that? I guess?
This is pretty on brand for the A's. Considering how cheap they are, this is not surprising whatsoever.
For comparison's sake, the Orioles are pretty cheap organization as well, but at least they got creative with their gift. They gave him a brick from Camden Yards with a nice message engraved into it. Sure, it's just a brick at the end of the day, but at least the sentiment was nice.
But this? This is just lame. On top of that, Cabrera has been sober for over 10 years now, at least as far as we know. He went into rebab following a drunk driving incident in 2011. Assuming he's still sober, what is he going to get out of a bottle of wine?
This is no surprise coming from the organization that is actively trying to lose as many games as possibly by spending as little as possible, while plotting a move to Las Vegas in the process. A's gonna A's.
