Tigers’ prized international prospect put himself on the map with record bomb in Rookie ball

The Detroit Tigers are fresh off the MLB Draft, and they got some positive grades for the guys they selected to add to their farm system. However, they have to be really excited by what's going on down in Rookie ball right now.

18-year-old Cris Rodriguez hit an absolute bomb that went 479 feet, which is the longest recorded homer of a player in the Tigers organization ever. He’s obviously still just a teenager and has a long way to go before he makes the big leagues, but it’s hard not to get excited about that raw power.

Detroit signed Rodriguez as an international prospect for $3.1 million in 2025, a franchise record for international signings. His power potential is huge, which is why he's the No. 6 overall prospect in Detroit’s organization. 

He played in the Dominican Summer League last year as a 17-year-old and put up some promising numbers. He hit .308/.340/.564 with 10 home runs and 39 runs batted in with 10 stolen bases.

Rodriguez is now in Florida and is hitting .261/.328/.467 with six homers, 26 RBI, and eight stolen bases. Unsurprisingly, his strikeout total is fairly high as he’s struck out 62 times and walked 16 times, so he'll have to learn a bit more plate discipline. 

He obviously has a long way to go until he is ready for the big leagues. One estimate has him making his debut in 2030, which seems about right. He’s still so young and he has a lot to learn about hitting while trying to prove himself at each level, but if keeps hitting bombs like the one he hit recently it’s going to be harder and harder to keep him in the minors for a long time.

Rodriguez could give Detroit’s maligned farm system a much-needed boost

The Tigers’ farm system took a pretty big tumble in the recent Baseball America rankings. Kevin McGonigle’s promotion and the injury troubles that have plagued many of the team’s most promising prospects are mainly why they fell.

Maybe Rodriguez can help lead a resurgence for the organization. He and other top prospects like Bryce Rainer are doing exciting things, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Detroit’s ranking went back up in the next few years.

Rodriguez put himself on the map, but now he has to build upon it and continue to get better to prove that he is more than just a guy with a lot of power in his bat.
