Tigers retain world-class broadcast team with new contracts for Jason Benetti, Dan Dickerson

For years after the Rod Allen and Mario Impemba era, the Detroit Tigers’ television broadcast team left a lot to be desired. They went through several candidates and no one seemed to stick, but the organization decided to spend a little money on their next play-by-play guy.

Jason Benetti was the splash hire ahead of the 2024 season, and he endeared himself to fans right away.

The quirky “geek” — as his own broadcast team calls him — had made his rounds in broadcasting, going from calling college basketball and football games on ESPN to being the play-by-play guy for his hometown Chicago White Sox, but now he’s found his new home in Detroit. And he’s going to be here for a while.

According to the Tigers’ official account, they just signed Benetti and fellow world-class broadcaster Dan Dickerson to contract extensions which will keep them around ”for years to come."

Tigers PR didn’t release official contract terms, but they did say that they both signed multi-year extensions and have “long-term” deals with the organization.

Quite the opposite of the Fifth Third Park naming, the Tigers actually listened to their fans with these extensions. After years of television play-by-play futility, Benetti has been a breath of fresh air. He pairs perfectly with former Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks to give Tigers fans a pleasurable viewing experience. He’s as knowledgeable as they come, and he has already made some iconic calls over his three years with Detroit.

Dickerson, on the other hand, has been the Tigers’ radio play-by-play guy since 2000 and it’s clear that he’s not ready to call it a career at the age of 67. He’s been the voice of the Tigers for decades now, and anyone who listens to games on the radio gets goosebumps from his “GONE” call after every home run.

These are two of the best broadcasters in the business and they’re elite at their respective duties on TV and on the radio. Tigers fans just got spoiled for years to come.

After the whole Rod and Mario mess that led to the breakup in 2018, the Tigers had been searching for an answer to the TV play-by-play problem. Matt Shepard wasn’t quite it, as he was often criticized for boring calls or just not providing a quality viewing experience. That wasn’t all his fault; he just wasn’t the right fit.

Then the Tigers started to get good again and they had some money to spend, which is where Benetti came in. It seems like decades ago that Rod and Mario graced the broadcast booth, but now it’s Benetti who’s one of the best in the business. Even when the Tigers are struggling, there’s endless entertainment flowing through the broadcast.

The same goes for Dickerson. He has a story for everything and he’s great at painting the picture of the field for fans who can’t watch on TV. His voice is also one of the most recognizable in baseball.

If the bullpen didn’t cost the team a playoff spot and Fifth Third listened to the fans and named the ballpark “Tiger Stadium” instead of Fifth Third Park, this would be an all-time great week for Tigers fans.
