When We Last Met
Rain washed out the Tigers-Indians game on Friday. Instead the team will play a double-header on Sunday. They will attempt to get tonight’s game in, but there are once again showers in the forecast.
The Detroit Tigers magic at Progressive Field and Alfredo Simon‘s domination of the Cleveland Indians this year took a hit in the series opener on Thursday as Simon was roughed up. The Tigers tried to come back on multiple occasions, but their awful pitching staff ensured a loss by giving the lead back. The result was another loss, 7-5.
Pitching Matchup
Justin Verlander (3-7, 3.43) had another quality start in his last outing, also against these Cleveland Indians, but as has happened often over the last five weeks, the Detroit Tigers’ offense could do absolutely nothing and Verlander’s effort was wasted last Sunday. That game marked the ninth game in a row that Verlander has given the Tigers a quality start, yet he is just 3-4 in that span.
Cody Allen (3-3, 3.72) opposed Verlander in that game and shutdown the Tigers’ offense, allowing just two hits over seven innings of work in helping his team to the shutout victory that clinched the series in Detroit. The rookie has been sharp since surrendering six run on August 7, allowing just four runs in three games since.
